& Gearbox Software

More controlled torque management and shift behaviour on DSG, ZF and other supported automatic gearboxes.

Gearbox calibration makes sense when it is handled together with the engine-side work. Torque limits, clutch pressures and shift strategy are assessed car by car.

Performance is data, not guesswork.

Every job is assessed with the car's current condition and hardware in mind. After calibration the relevant running parameters are checked and the result verified.

How we work

01

Pre-check

Diagnostic scan, fault memory and an assessment of the car's mechanical condition.

02

Data logging

Logs are taken on the existing software; the baseline values are kept for comparison.

03

Calibration

Loading software prepared for the specific car and hardware configuration.

04

Verification

New logs are taken and compared with the earlier data; corrected if needed.

The transmission control unit

When and how an automatic gearbox shifts, at what pressure the clutches hold and how much torque it will accept from the engine — all of that is decided by the transmission control unit.

Engine-side calibration cannot be used in full if the gearbox stays on factory settings. The two units work as a pair.

Torque limits and clutch pressures

To protect the gearbox, the factory software caps the torque it will accept from the engine. If the engine-side change goes above that cap, the gearbox pulls torque back and the expected response never arrives.

Clutch pressures are also reassessed against the torque being transmitted. Too little pressure means slip; too much means harsh, uncomfortable shifts.

Shifts and manual mode

Shift times, shift points and the response to the accelerator are worked on. The aim is not simply to make it quicker, but to get more consistent behaviour without spoiling everyday comfort.

Holding the selected gear in manual mode and downshift responding faster to requests can both be adjusted.Launch control is only considered on cars that support it in hardware and software.

DSG and ZF work

On Volkswagen group cars we work on DSG gearboxes such as the DQ200, DQ250 and DQ381. On the BMW side the ZF 8HP family is what we see most often.

Every gearbox type has its own limits. Before the work, the gearbox's current condition and service history are assessed.ECU calibration the result is more consistent when the two are planned together.
